The 5 Best Places to Go Camping Near D.C.

  |     |   Local Favorites

Washington, DC, is a thriving metropolitan area rich with history and abundant cultural hotspots. And that's only one of the reasons why living in a luxury apartment at The Vintage is so fun! Not only are you within easy reach of amazing eateries, museums, and famous architecture, you're also not far away from some incredible camping spots.

So leave the hustle and bustle of the city behind by making a great escape to the outdoors! Here are a few of the best locations where you can sleep under the stars.

Pohick Bay Campground

Located in Lorton, Virginia, with a thousand acres to explore, you're sure to find the perfect blend of thrilling activities and shady groves in which to relax. Although their Pirate's Cove Waterpark is closed this year, Pohick Bay Regional Park still offers plenty of amenities and natural getaways. The hallmark of this retreat is how it provides so many different ways to camp.

Whether you want to stay in a comfy, country cabin, bring your RV, or just pitch a tent and fall asleep to the sound of insects humming, Pohick Bay will take care of you. Pets are welcome, so it's no problem if you want to bring your fur baby along. Rent a kayak, canoe, stand-up paddleboard, or pedal boat and spend your day on the water.

Afterward, why not kick back on the shore and do some fishing? Or explore eight and a half miles of gorgeous hiking trails that offer glimpses of the water and wild scenery. Maybe spot a bluebird in one of the fifteen nesting boxes! Pohick Bay Regional Park also features miniature golf, a disc golf course, and paddle tours on the bay. Don't forget to visit the park's very own camp store where you can purchase anything you need for a glorious day out!

This year, the park is offering a weekend special on their family camping sites and rustic cabins. If you stay two nights, you'll get the third night at 50% off. They're also giving away many other fabulous deals on deluxe cabins, extended weekend stays, and non-electric sites, so make sure to stop by their website for the coupon codes.

Hillwood Camping Park

Hillwood Camping Park is an excellent choice for a peaceful weekend holiday. While they don't offer the extensive options and bells-and-whistles amenities that Pohick Bay does, this is an ideal pick for someone who wants a quiet, no-frills camping experience. They boast full-service hookups for RV-goers, but those without a travel trailer can still enjoy the tranquil woods and fishing pond.

When you're ready for a few comforts of civilization, you'll have access to a clean bathhouse and laundry room, as well as a pleasant picnic area. Another perk of Hillwood Camping Park is that they're only four miles from Manassas National Battlefield Park, which is a great place to spend the afternoon, soak up some history, and experience live artillery reenactments on scheduled days. You'll also be within a stone's throw of some well-reviewed restaurants, such as Musashi Japanese Steakhouse and Maaza 29 Kitchen & Bar

Oak Ridge Campground

Nestled within Prince William Forest in Virginia, this little slice of heaven is well worth the forty-one-mile drive from your apartment. With thirty-seven miles of hiking trails, rustic cabin rentals, and both on and off-road biking, Oak Ridge Campground is the complete nature-immersion experience. The combined network of hiking trails is the largest in the state of Virginia.

And if you think that's phenomenal, then treat yourself to exploring their Chopawamsic Backcountry Area. "Chopawamsic" is an Algonquin word that means "divided streams" or "river flats" — so you can expect to see lots of little rivers here! An absolute must-visit, this portion of the campground is truly a hidden gem of breathtaking natural beauty.

Although there are no modern conveniences in this primitive camping adventure (besides a Porta Potty), you can fish from the park's side of the Breckenridge Reservoir, find sanctuary beside the bank of a meandering stream, explore the trails, and watch for wildlife.

Greenbelt Park

If you'd like to keep your adventure a little closer to home, then look no further than Greenbelt Park. A mere eleven miles from The Vintage, the park features a clever mix of wilderness and comfort. You can select a shady, secluded spot in the surrounding woodlands for your camping site, while still having restrooms, drinking water, and shower facilities available.

Although Greenbelt Park doesn't provide electric hookups, it's RV friendly. Wander along ten miles of hiking trails and animal watch for deer and chipmunks, or enjoy a restful picnic beside Still Creek. The park is currently closed due to a construction project, but the new, improved Greenbelt Park will be reopening soon in late summer of this year.

Robert C. McDonell Campground

For another primitive camping experience, try Robert C. McDonell Campground. Thirty-two minutes away in Rockville, Maryland, the camp hosts seven primitive sites available for walk-in or by reservation. Your camping area comes complete with a fire pit, grill, and picnic tables. Two tent pads per section keep you off the bare ground.

Since the campground is only one portion of Cabin John Regional Park, you'll be able to partake of four miles of trails, an athletic area, the ice rink, and the tennis center. And don't miss out on riding the Cabin John Miniature Train through two miles of the scenic countryside! One ride lasts only about fifteen minutes, but riding a second time is totally allowed. The train resumes operation in July and will supply its passengers with good clean fun and fresh air seven days per week.
