Our nation's capital is home to some of the most prolific art galleries in the world. Whether you've lived here for years or you're just in town for a few days, these exhibits shouldn't be missed.

As you plan your itinerary, you'll quickly find that the list of galleries is widespread and expansive. Today, we're sharing 10 of our favorite art galleries in Washington D.C. to help you get started. From the timeless and traditional to the offbeat and quirky, you're sure to find plenty of thought-provoking pieces to admire.

Visiting D.C. Art Gallery

1. National Gallery of Art

Let's start with one of the biggest and most well-known DC art galleries. Located on Constitution Avenue, the National Gallery of Art will take your breath away from the moment you spot it.

In the West Building, you'll find an incredible array of neoclassical works, including paintings and sculptures that date back to the 13th century. If your tastes lean a little more modern, then head over to the East Building. Designed by renowned Chinese-American architect I.M. Pei, it houses four show-stopping levels of contemporary art.

One of the best parts about this particular gallery? Admission is always free and you don't need a pass to enter. Be sure to allot plenty of time to check out the on-site Sculpture Garden, too.

2. Smithsonian American Art Museum

Located in the heart of D.C.'s downtown cultural district, the Smithsonian American Art Museum (SAAM) is a local treasure. At the main building, you'll discover a range of rotating exhibitions highlighting nationally-recognized artists.

The history of this art gallery dates all the way back to 1829 when a local man named John Varden began looking for a place to store his prized collection of European art. In 1841, those works found a home in the city's Patent Office Building.

Though the collection grew and changed locations over the years, it found its way back to that same building. Today, the historic Patent Office Building is known as the Donald W. Reynolds Center for American Art and Portraiture. Here, you'll find SAAM, as well as the equally-intriguing National Portrait Gallery.

Admission to SAAM is free and includes three levels of folk art, impressionism exhibits, and contemporary American art.

3. Lost Origins Gallery

Looking for galleries in Washington DC that are a little more off the beaten path? If so, then be sure to check out Lost Origins Gallery. Located near The Vintage in the vibrant Mount Pleasant neighborhood, this gallery hosts many different events and exhibitions throughout the year.

From literary readings and live music to photographs and paintings, you'll find it all here. The goal of the Lost Origins Gallery is to serve as a central meeting space for people to express their ideas and celebrate culture. Tickets are priced by event, so be sure to check the website before you go.

4. DC Arts Center

The DC Arts Center is a short walk away from Lost Origins Gallery. Though the building hosts a range of programs including an on-site theatre, the art gallery is a space to behold. Founded in 1989, it's designated as an alternative arts center where local artists can display their works and hone their creativity.

If you're looking to discover new and emerging local artists, then this is the place to go. You'll find works by poets, painters, sculptors, and much more. The galleries are free and open to the public, though donations are appreciated.

5. Phillips Collection

Located in D.C.'s Dupont Circle neighborhood, the Phillips Collection is recognized as the nation's first museum of modern art. Founded in 1921 by philanthropist and art collector Duncan Phillips, it houses nearly 6,000 individual works.

In addition to permanent and rotating exhibitions, you'll also find free community workshops designed to spark local conversation around art-related topics. Many of these programs are held off-site at the Collection's Town Hall Education Arts Recreation Campus (THEARC).

General adult admission is $16, but members can visit for free.

6. Foundry Gallery

Visitors who appreciate exceptional contemporary art will feel right at home at Foundry Gallery. Located near Columbia Heights, this gallery has supported upcoming and established D.C. artists for 50 years.

In 1971, the gallery got its start in the Duvall Foundry building, located in Georgetown. It moved to its current location in 2015, and now showcases works spanning many different styles and techniques. In addition to rotating exhibitions, you can also visit Foundry Gallery to enjoy artist talks, workshops, demonstrations, and artists' opening receptions.

While shows are priced by event, visits to the Member Gallery are free.

7. Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden

No visit to the National Mall would be complete without a stop at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. Located on the south side, this circular structure is impossible to miss. It embodies everything we love about contemporary art, with a range of exhibits and events to enjoy.

For more than 50 years, the Hirshhorn has served as one of the top modern art museums in the country. Here, you'll find one of the most illustrious collections of American and European art in the world, along with exhibits that spotlight current American artists on the rise.

Admission to the art museum and adjacent sculpture garden is free.

8. Zenith Gallery

A quick drive from The Vintage, Zenith Gallery is home to a dazzling array of fine art. Established in 1978, it's been a local mainstay for decades. Celebrating artists and collectors across the country, it offers an ever-changing collection of paintings, sculptures, photographs, tapestries, and more.

If you find yourself inspired as you browse the exhibits, then you're in luck. The works in Zenith Gallery are available for purchase, and the team also connects buyers with artists to work on commissioned pieces.

9. National Museum of African Art

Also located at the National Mall, the National Museum of African Art features a gorgeous collection of ancient paintings, manuscripts, costumes, and much more. These exhibitions are designed to recognize the rich art culture in Africa, as well as the groundbreaking work of local African artists.

The museum's dedicated Education Department provides different activities for visitors to learn more about global arts and humanities via home-based programs, online videos, and classroom-based activities. Admission is free.

10. Touchstone Gallery

Since 1976, Touchstone Gallery has been recognized as a go-to spot for modern and contemporary art. Located near Mount Vernon Square, this street-level space has won several "Best of DC" awards in local publications, including The Washington Post.

Visit for the rotating art exhibitions, but stay for the lively opening receptions, outreach opportunities, and other community events. In-person admission is free, so check the online calendar for upcoming shows and releases.

This series even has an optional camera pre-selection class if you're struggling with finding the right equipment to get started.  Lincoln photography also offers individual classes covering specific topics such as nighttime photography, composition, and various editing software.

Washington Photo Safari

Is your ideal photography class more about getting out into the city and snapping photos and less fiddling with your camera in the classroom? Well, Washington Photo Safari might be for you. WPS prefers to teach photography with a hands-on, out-in-the-field approach organized into "safaris" that are half-day or full-day events where a group of students can capture various locations throughout the city. Its instructors work with the students while taking pictures, helping them with the technical aspects of their cameras along the way.

WPS is accessible to anybody with a desire to take photos, offering an online workshop focusing on how to improve your photography skills with just your iPhone and how to get the most out of some of the advanced features the iPhone offers. It even has a 3-hour museum Safari just for smartphone photographers! Most of the Safaris begin at or near Metro stations, so they're incredibly easy to get to — especially for Vintage residents.

Our nation's capital is packed full of architecture, natural beauty, and culture that's worth capturing. Plus, you live near some of the nation's most talented and passionate photographers who can help you use your equipment to its fullest. All that's left is to sign up for your first class, workshop, or meetup and get snapping! Whether you're an advanced shutterbug or you're just getting started in the hobby, you've got everything you need to begin shooting right here in the local area.

There is almost nothing better in the warm spring and summer months than being able to pop into a local juice bar to get a fresh juice filled with seasonal fruits, vegetables, herbs, and more. The same can actually be said year-round, as the nutrients in fresh juice can help you stave off colds and infections during the cooler months and keep your body functioning at its best.

The good news is that there are plenty of juice bar options in Greater Washington, D.C., including in the Mount Pleasant neighborhood. Here are a few local favorites, and all within a few minutes’ walk, drive, or public transit commute of The Vintage.

5 Must-Try Local Juice Bars

Juice Smoothie Bar

If you’re in the mood for a fresh juice to take with you on your commute to work, on a walk through a local park or dog park, to freshen up after a good workout, or as a pick-me-up while you’re conducting business from home, the Mount Pleasant neighborhood has you covered. Here are some local juice bar favorites.

  1. JustJuice Smoothie Bar

If you’re looking for a juice company that’s focused on “spreading the smoothie love,” JustJuice Smoothie Bar may be the spot for you. It’s drinks are 100 percent natural with “no weird stuff” added, meaning you get local, organic, “just the good stuff” ingredients every time you stop in. JustJuice’s mission is to serve the healthiest smoothie in the greater D.C. and Virginia area, as well as “supporting just causes through business” by giving back to people and the planet. Best of all, it is located on the corner of 14th Street NW and Park Rd NW, a convenient 7-minute walk or 5-minute drive from The Vintage.

  1. Amen Cafe

For a nearby cafe that offers a neighborhood-friendly environment to all walks of life, Amen Cafe is just off US-29 and Rock Creek Church Road NW and a must-try. It’s a 7-minute drive or 21-minute walk from The Vintage, meaning it’s the perfect distance if you’re looking to go for a nice walk on a weekend or to clear your head during a break in a long day of work. Amen Cafe is proud to offer both American and Ethiopian cuisine as well as a robust selection of smoothies and freshly pressed juices. Each juice and smoothie is “made to order” using “special family recipes,” and there is certainly something for everyone at this community gathering spot.

  1. NuVegan Cafe

Those searching for a vegan restaurant with plenty of fresh options — including fresh-squeezed juices and smoothies — may want to check out NuVegan Cafe on Georgia Ave NW. The restaurant is located just 18 minutes’ walking or 5 minutes by car from The Vintage, and has a mission “to become the motivating force that sparks a movement towards global awareness by redefining the perception of vegan cuisine.” It offers plenty of vegan options in addition to a menu of juices including apple, carrot, cucumber, garlic, kale, parsley, beet, celery, collard greens, ginger, lemon, spinach, and tomato. Visitors can mix up to three fresh-pressed juices for nearly endless combinations, plus add extras such as agave, banana, ginseng, maple syrup, or spirulina for a minimal fee. Being a pet owner can be one of life’s small joys, but that joy can turn to frustration when it comes to moving with your four-legged companions. Finding and settling into a new home for you and your animals can be challenging and overwhelming, because the pressure is on to find a place that meets not only your own needs but also those of your furry friend.

Many buildings or homes are unwelcoming to tenants with pets, or only accepting of certain kinds. Many buildings have restrictions on the breed or weight of the animal, or limits on the number per apartment. Apartment hunters should be sure to mention they have a pet (or pets) and ask about the community’s pet policy.

This guide will cover what you need to know when moving with a furry friend and offer ideas for finding the right place for everyone concerned.

4 Things to Know When Moving With Pets

couple moving with a dog

You should factor in your lifestyle as well as that of your pet when searching for a new home. In addition to making sure your new home is pet friendly, there are other logistics that require planning when moving with an animal (or two) from one place to another.

  1. Consider Your Pet’s Needs

Maybe you have a dog that needs outdoor space to run around. Maybe you need a designated space for your cat toys and scratching post. A larger animal will likely need more indoor space than a smaller breed. Make a list of your requirements and keep these in mind when searching for apartments. Some places even offer pet-centric amenities such as dog grooming stations, dog runs, and special events for pet owners.

  1. Research the Surrounding Area

dog park

You may have found an ideal apartment in a pet-friendly building, but you’ll also want to consider the location. You might check whether there is a park or dog run nearby, or a veterinarian or doggy day care in the neighborhood. Proximity to these and other services are important and could be a deciding factor if you’re weighing the pros and cons of more than one apartment.

  1. Read the Fine Print of Your New Home’s Pet Policy

Be sure to familiarize yourself with the rules and regulations that apply to pets at your new home. If there’s a pet policy mentioned in your lease, make sure you understand all the finer points. If you have questions, be sure to address them in advance to avoid any surprises after moving in.

  1. Moving With a Pet Can Mean Additional Expenses

moving with a pet

Some buildings charge an extra one-time security deposit for a pet, and some landlords add additional fees to the monthly rent. Be prepared in either case to pay a bit extra for your furry companions. Those moving a long distance may need to use a pet transport service, which will be an additional charge beyond regular moving services.

Taking your needs and your pet’s needs into account, and being realistic about the costs involved when moving with a pet, will help guide you in your search for the perfect animal-friendly home.

Tips for a Successful Move With Your Pet

Moving is hectic enough without also having to worry about your pet. With some extra planning, you can help make sure the transition is a smooth one for both you and your animal companions. Keep these tips in mind to make moving with your pet a breeze:

Keep Calm

Pets can sense anxiety in their owners, and it causes them to be anxious along with you. Packing up and moving can be stressful, but if you stay peaceful around your pet, chances are they’ll remain calm as well.

Have Your Pet Explore Its Carrier

dog in crate carrier

Pets that will be transported in a kennel or crate will be more relaxed if you have them spend a few nights in the kennel prior to moving day. This will get them acclimated to the space and make things more comfortable and familiar.

Send Pets Elsewhere During Loading

The activity, and perhaps extra people, involved on moving day can cause a pet to panic or become overly excited. Send your pet to doggy day care, if possible, or keep them in a space away from all the action.

Prepare an “Overnight Kit”

Pack a bag with enough food, cat litter, toys, medicines, and other essentials to get you through the first few days of unpacking. This will avoid having to search for these items when you arrive at your new home.

Settle Into Your New Digs

Make sure your pet has its own space in your new home with familiar toys, blankets, or other accessories. Confine them to a certain room or section of your home while they get adjusted to the new environment, if possible.

Even the above ideas aren’t guaranteed to make moving with pets a breeze, so make sure you give your pet as much attention as possible. One way to do that is to explore your surroundings with your pet. If you’ve got a dog, check out dog parks in your area. (If you’re in Washington, D.C., here are the best dog-friendly greenspaces).

Moving to a new home involves a lot of planning, from packing to setting up utility accounts to picking up keys. There is one more item your moving checklist should contain: updating your mailing address.

It is best to take care of changing your address sooner rather than later to be sure you receive all your mail at the appropriate place. Here is how to update your address at the post office, and other businesses you will need to contact.

Family moving

Updating Your Mailing Address: The Post Office and Beyond

Your first thought about changing your address might be to notify the post office. This is a crucial step, but it’s only one of many.

Changing your address with the post office is a simple procedure that can be done online, in person or over the phone. You should also plan to update your address with your employer, your bank, and your insurance company, among other institutions.

Online

You can update your mailing address with the United States Postal Service by visiting their website and filling out their online form. Completing your change of address online is the quickest and easiest way to update your address. The post office can begin forwarding mail to your new home once you’ve completed the form. Here are a few things to keep in mind about the process:

  1. Have Both Your Current and New Address On Hand
You will be asked to provide your current address as well as the address of the place you are moving to.

  2. Know Your Move-In Date
You will be asked for a start date for the mail forwarding service. You can list the day you plan to move or even a few days before if you’d like your mail to be rerouted sooner.

  3. Have Your Credit Card Ready
USPS charges a fee of $1.05 when you update your address online.

    person using credit card online

  4. Make the Change for Family Members
You can update the mailing address of other family members at the same time if you share the same last name. You will need to fill out a separate form for each person who has a different last name.

  5. Update Your Voter Registration Information
After you have filled out the online change-of-address form, you will also have the option to update your voter registration information.

In Person

You can stop by your nearest post office and request a moving packet in person. Inside the packet you’ll find PS Form 3575. Fill out this form and return it to the post office worker or drop it in the mail slot.

postal change of address

If you change your address in person, you will not be charged the $1.05 verification fee. You can expect a confirmation letter at your new mailing address within five business days.

Over the Phone

It’s also possible to update your mailing address over the phone. Call 800-ASK-USPS and follow the prompts. USPS will charge a $1.05 fee for address changes made over the phone.

Additional Places to Update Your Mailing Address

There are other important institutions and vendors who need to know about your new address. You may need to contact the following with your new contact info:

  • Your Bank
In most cases, a change of address can be completed online. Check your bank’s website or call your local branch for more information on updating your contact information.

    online banking

  • Your Employer
Contact your manager or your company’s human resources department. Let them know you’re moving to a new address and that all relevant communications should be sent to your new home.

  • Other Lending Institutions
Notify any lending institutions of your new address so you don’t miss any important communications regarding a mortgage, car loan, or other loan.

  • Your Insurance Company
Let your insurance company know about your upcoming move if you’ve got a homeowner’s insurance policy, an auto policy, personal property insurance, or renter’s insurance. In most cases, policies can easily be transferred to your new address.

  • Utility Companies
Contact utility companies to close out your account for your former home and transfer service to your new address, if applicable, so they can send you any relevant paperwork such as final bills or confirmation of canceled service.

  • Recurring Vendor Shipments
Any vendors that are sending you recurring shipments, such as a monthly subscription service, should be on your address update list, and you’ll have to contact each one individually. Most of the time, this can be done online or via email. Call the vendor directly with any questions.

  • Department of Motor Vehicles
Contact your local DMV to update your address on your driver’s license and your motor vehicle registration. In most cases, this can be completed online. Many states require you to update your license within 30 days of moving to your new address.

There are many organizations that will need to know your new contact info, so this list is only a first step. Changing your address with each one is usually a quick process that only takes a few minutes, so it’s best to think through who else needs your contact info and get them updated quickly.

Don’t Rent an Apartment Until You Read This Guide

Becoming a first-time apartment renter is an exciting experience, whether you’re moving across town or the country. It’s a rite of passage that establishes independence and responsibility for many. Renting an apartment can seem like an overwhelming process, but everything will go smoothly with a little research and planning.

Considerations for First-Time Renters

budget to rent an apartment

There are a few things a first-time apartment renter should decide before beginning their search. Perhaps the most important decision is the budget: how much can you afford to spend on rent each month? Be sure to consider the additional costs that are involved with moving into a new apartment when planning your budget, such as:

  • security deposit

  • pet fees

  • amenity fees

  • utility costs

  • moving costs

You may want to consider getting a roommate when figuring out your monthly rent budget. A roommate will allow you to afford a larger or more upscale apartment as well as have someone to share household chores and upkeep with.

Another thing to consider is whether you’ll need a co-signer or guarantor. A co-signer “vouches” for your lease by signing the contract. If you are unable to pay your rent, the burden legally falls upon the co-signer. First-time renters often need a co-signer because they have no rent history that shows they are reliable and responsible.

Tips for Finding Your Ideal First Apartment

You’re ready to find your dream abode now that you’ve settled the basics. Here are some ways to ensure you’re getting the most out of your apartment search.

1. Narrow the Search

DC area map of apartments

Think about what part of town or neighborhood you’d like to live in and target those areas. You may want to base your decision around where you work or where you like to spend your free time. It’s also good to consider whether you’d prefer to live in a quiet part of town or close to restaurants, museums and other venues

2. Consider Amenity Preferences

When it comes time to look for an apartment, there’s more to it than just setting a budget and picking a neighborhood. There are several other things you’ll want to think about. If you live in an urban area, parking might be difficult to come by or cost extra. It’s also a good idea to consider which amenities, if any, are most important to you. Do you prefer a lobby attendant for added security? Have you always wanted to live somewhere with a pool? If you have pets, you’ll want to make sure your potential new apartment is pet friendly.

3. Do a Walk-Through

touring a new apartment

If you’re moving to a new city or town, it can be hard to view apartments in person. But as helpful as photos and online tours are, nothing can replace physically being in the space and seeing it with your own eyes. Not only will you get a better idea of the apartment itself, but you’ll also get a better feel for the building and the surrounding neighborhood.

4. Ask About Utilities

Some apartments include some or all utilities in the monthly rent. Be sure you understand which utilities are included (if any) and which ones you’ll need to cover yourself when searching for apartments. Understanding your utility costs will help you stay within your target budget each month.

These are a handful of very helpful tips for finding your first apartment. Don’t leave home without them! So, now that we’ve covered the basics, what are your next steps?

The Application Process

online application for renting an apartment

Once you’ve found your ideal apartment, you’ll need to go through the application process. A typical application process involves the following steps:

  • Fill out the application (usually done online).

  • Pay the application fee.

  • Give consent for the landlord or management company to run a credit check and a criminal background check. You may also be asked to provide character references, especially if you don’t have a lengthy credit history or have poor credit.

  • Sign the lease. After your application is approved, you’ll be sent a copy of the lease to sign. Read over it carefully and ask questions if anything is unclear.

  • Pay the security deposit, first month’s rent, and any other fees. You may also need to prepay any pet fees, amenity fees, parking costs, etc.

  • Pick up the keys.

These are the steps of the typical steps of the application process. Before you settle into that brand new lease, there are a few additional considerations to make the move go smoothly, especially if you’re a first-time renter.

3 Common Mistakes for First-Time Renters

Even if you’ve planned ahead and done your research, first-time renters can make some common mistakes. Here’s how to avoid these pitfalls.

1. Forgoing Renter’s Insurance

Renter’s insurance is often an afterthought, especially for first-time renters. It’s important to have coverage, however. Some management companies even require it. Without renter’s insurance, your personal property isn’t protected, and you could be held liable for any injuries that occur in your apartment.

2. Neglecting to Read the Lease

This is a crucial yet often overlooked step. It’s important to read through all sections of your lease to be sure you understand what’s required of you and what you should expect of your landlord or management company. If you understand the terms of the lease in advance, it should avoid misunderstandings down the road.

3. Forgetting to Set Up Utilities

Some apartments include some or all utilities in the monthly rent. But some require you to set up utilities on your own. Be sure to research what utilities you’re required to set up on your own and coordinate with the utility company in advance of your move-in date. You don’t want to spend your first night in your new place without electricity or internet!

Planning in advance can help a first-time apartment renter avoid these pitfalls. Renting, especially for the first time, is a pretty monumental step in life, so take a little extra time to prepare.
