If you’ve ever taken a yoga class, you probably came out of it feeling stronger and more relaxed. People of all ages, no matter their experience level, enjoy numerous physical and mental benefits from practicing yoga, including increased strength, balance, flexibility, mental clarity, and reduced stress.

In fact, a collection of 11 studies reviewed by Johns Hopkins researchers have shown that practicing yoga may reduce the risk of heart disease, aid in smoking cessation, and relieve discomfort for people with arthritis. Yoga is also known for helping reduce pain and inflammation and increasing energy and vitality.

And that’s before you even consider the powerful mental and cognitive benefits associated with yoga. Many people who practice yoga describe it as a spiritual journey that helps them better understand the connection between their minds and body. Practicing yoga can also help create mental clarity and calmness, center your attention, and sharpen concentration.

Whether you’re looking for another avenue for your exercise routine, searching for a fun and healthy excuse to get out of the apartment, or are looking for a new way to manage stress, you’re in luck. Mt. Pleasant is home to five of DC’s top-tier yoga studios, and you can take a class today.

Summer is here, and there’s no better place to enjoy the weather than Mount Pleasant, D.C. The season is great for allowing residents and visitors to get out, see the sights, and enjoy the more mild temperatures. Whether it’s taking a stroll through beautiful, historic streets, grabbing a cup of coffee on a cozy patio, doing some local shopping, or enjoying the neighborhood’s natural beauty, there’s truly no shortage of warm-weather fun.

Whether you’re a local or just visiting for a while, here are the five must-try things to do in Mount Pleasant this summer.

1. Take a Scenic Walk

Group Scenic walk in Mount Pleasant

The Mount Pleasant area is filled with rich history that’s truly worth seeing. Try taking a walk or bike ride through the neighborhood to see its village-like character from centuries past, including notable sites such as:

  • Ingleside, the neighborhood’s oldest home

  • Czech Row, a place where Czech and other European refugees found a community after fleeing political hardship in the 1940s

  • The home of Dr. Robert Dean, the first African-American to own a home in Mount Pleasant

You’ll also see historic architecture, a diverse group of ethnic restaurants, local businesses, and so much more. If you’re looking for a more structured experience, check out the Mount Pleasant Heritage Trail, a self-guided tour that leads you to many of the neighborhood’s historical sites; even the path that Teddy Roosevelt walked to go skinny dipping in Rock Creek Park.

2. Dine at One of the Many Patio Cafes

Looking for a high-quality cup of coffee or a bite to eat? Try it outside in one of the many local cafes offering outside patio seating:

  • Addis Paris Cafe

This Parisian Cafe offers guests Ethiopian and French flavors on a cozy and comfortable patio. Plus, they serve an all-day brunch on the weekends and have daily happy hour beer and wine specials. It’s also a fantastic place to enjoy a cup of coffee.

  • Haydee’s

A local favorite, Haydee’s is the creation of El Salvadoran immigrants Haydee Vanegas and Mario Alas. For over 20 years, they’ve been providing locals and visitors authentic and delicious El Salvadoran dishes. Haydee’s currently takes reservations for patio seating from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m.

  • Purple Patch

Purple Patch is the neighborhood’s go-to spot for Filipino cuisine. This award-winning cafe serves brunch, lunch, and dinner on a lovely patio that is also dog-friendly (leashes required). If you’re going for breakfast or brunch, try their Ube waffle and Filipino fried chicken for a unique and delicious take on a classic American breakfast.

  • Marx Cafe

3. Visit the Farmer’s Market

Mount Pleasant Farmer’s Market

If you head over to the Mount Pleasant Street Plaza at 17th & Lamont on a Saturday morning this summer, you’ll find the neighborhood farmer’s market. It is producer-only, meaning everything sold is made by the folks selling it, and you’ll find so much more than just locally grown produce. The market hosts a bike clinic for passionate cyclists, a book sale by the Mount Pleasant Library, a compost collection, and more. Whether you’re looking for high-quality, locally sourced food or a way to spend a Saturday morning outdoors, you’ll definitely want to stop by.

4. Take a Trip to the National Zoo

Mount Pleasant National Zoo

Just a few minutes from Mount Pleasant, Smithsonian’s National Zoo remains one of the neighborhood’s most popular attractions. The best part is that admission is completely free for all guests. You can walk through the Zoo’s numerous exhibits, including Great Cats, the Cheetah Conservation Station, Elephant Trails, the Small Mammal House, and many more. You can also get a free Asia Trail/Panda pass that will allow you to access Asia trail exhibits, including a giant panda viewing. For more information about how to obtain your free entry pass or Asia Trail/Panda pass, check out the National Zoo’s website

5. Go for a Bike Ride at Rock Creek Park

Bike Ride at Rock Creek Park

Rock Creek Park is a 1,754-acre National park located near Mount Pleasant. It offers visitors the opportunity to escape the bustling city and enjoy a peaceful, natural oasis where they can enjoy a great variety of outdoor activities. The park has numerous bike trails that cycling fans love. You can bring your own cycle or go to one of multiple Capital Bikeshare stations nearby (including one on 17th St NW by Lamont Park and one on Harvard St and Adams Mill Road NW). When the weather is at its best this summer, you’ll love riding these scenic trails.

Find the Perfect Place to Call Home

Mount Pleasant is a beautiful place to live year-round, but when summertime comes, the sun comes out, and the warm weather approaches, locals and visitors never find themselves without things to do. So, what are you waiting for? Go out and have some fun in the sun!

Grocery delivery during COVID

During the current pandemic, we encourage our residents to avoid interacting with large numbers of people whenever possible. Finding alternative ways to accomplish certain tasks at home can keep you and the rest of our community safer.

Ordering your groceries online and having them delivered to The Vintage instead of going to the grocery store is a simple change that you can make to your routine to lower the number of trips outside the building that you need to make each week. Here are some of the most popular grocery stores in the Mount Pleasant area that offer delivery services, as well as details about how each store manages online ordering and how our building is handling deliveries!

Benefits of Utilizing Grocery Delivery Services

Grocery delivery can be a safer and more convenient alternative to shopping in a grocery store for many of our residents. Because following the social distancing guidelines that were put into place in March is still recommended, we encourage our residents to consider grocery delivery to minimize potential exposure for both themselves and the more susceptible members of our community.

Protect Yourself

Ordering your groceries and other essentials online is a simple way to keep yourself and your family safe. During a time when many of our residents are trying to avoid leaving home as much as possible, grocery delivery services can eliminate several trips out of the building each month and minimize the number of people you need to come in contact with.

Protect Others

If you're not feeling well, ordering your groceries online allows you to take care of a necessary task while avoiding other people. Although we generally prefer that residents pick up their groceries from our team members after they are dropped off, we can also bring them to your door for a completely contactless option if needed.

Save Time and Money

The convenience of having your groceries delivered can continue to improve your life even after the world starts looking a bit more normal. If you feel like there aren't enough hours in the day to get everything done, ordering essentials online instead of going to the store can give you more time to spend with your family and on activities you enjoy. Although most platforms do charge a small fee for delivery services, you won't need to spend money on gas or other transportation to go to the grocery store.

The Vintage's Commitment to Meeting the Needs of Our Residents

At The Vintage, we are taking advantage of the latest technology in order to make our building as safe for our residents as possible. We use Mobile Doorman to help our residents order groceries and handle a variety of other types of requests. We will receive your grocery delivery for you and notify you that it has arrived in the app. In most circumstances, we prefer that residents pick up their deliveries from us, but we are able to bring them to your door if needed. We also follow this procedure when residents receive packages or other types of deliveries.

Mobile Doorman makes our residents' lives easier in several other ways. Through the app, you can:

  • Register guests
  • Reserve gym time
  • Participate in our digital bulletin board to communicate with other residents

We particularly recommend making gym reservations at this time to accommodate the lower capacity that we currently require due to social distancing guidelines.

We have also moved many other aspects of living at The Vintage online for your convenience and safety. Residents are able to open package lockers using their smartphones to minimize needing to touch the surface of the locker, and many of our rental services are handled digitally, such as:

  • Applications
  • Rent payment
  • Service requests

Whether you're a Mount Pleasant native, new to the area, or you're considering making this beautiful neighborhood of Washington, DC, your home, this gorgeous corner of our nation's capital has something for everyone. Located just ten minutes from the Columbia Heights Metro subway station, Mount Pleasant manages to maintain its small-town charm while flaunting a funky, hip vibe entirely its own. Aside from its stunning row houses and historic architecture, the area boasts its own library and a thriving main street filled with vintage storefronts, shops, and restaurants. And speaking of restaurants, the diverse eateries, bars, and cafés are some of the District's finest! Here are but a few of the best places to grab a tasty brunch in this enchanting community.

Beau Thai

With savory, Southeast Asian ingredients and to-die-for aromas, who can resist Thai food? Beau Thai offers a full brunch menu, which includes Thai donuts, sausage, chicken entrées, and omelets. Their Hangover Special is a sure cure with two fried eggs and "life-changing" sweet sausage! If you're looking for something on the light side, try their green mango entrée salad. Green mangos and carrots combine with the flavors of peanuts, coconut flakes, shallots, and red chilies for an irresistible culinary experience. Or how about steak and eggs, Thai style? Served with sweet and spicy sauce and bean sprouts, it'll make your taste buds do cartwheels. Beau Thai also offers vegan and gluten-free options. Before you go, be sure to grab a delicious, creme-topped Thai iced coffee or tea.

Purple Patch

If Filipino-American fusion is more up your alley, give Purple Patch a try. Their brunch menu features an extensive selection of breakfast and lunch dishes, as well as those containing both. Try some classic fried beef or pork spring rolls. Their buttermilk waffles with ice cream are a divine late-morning treat. Or savor red snapper and smoked bacon bagels. They also provide an ample array of appetizers, gluten-free and vegan options, to-share dishes, and decadent desserts. If you've never tried their bread pudding with purple yam ice cream, you should. Oh, how you should! Especially since it's sprinkled with granola and caramel. You'll find a meal perfect for every appetite. It's no wonder that in 2020, Purple Patch was voted one of the 25 best Filipino restaurants in the United States by Big 7 Travel. They've also been featured in Rachael Ray's magazine as a notable, female-owned restaurant in Washington, DC.

Taqueria Habanero

To satisfy your craving, Taqueria Habanero delivers such brunch-worthy choices as Chorizo (Mexican sausage) tacos and mushroom and spinach quesadillas. With over 1,100 reviews on Google, their fantastic selection of South-of-the-Border sustenance includes every kind of taco you could dream of, such as salmon, mushroom, beef tongue, shrimp, and grilled octopus. Or, mix things up with a fajita stuffed with beef, shrimp, and chicken served with assorted grilled vegetables. Perhaps you'd enjoy a Mexican sausage and cheese sandwich or lightly breaded chicken. Whatever your preference, don't forget that Taqueria Habanero also serves an incredible non-alcoholic Sangria — the perfect way to get your 11:30 a.m. fix! You can also order online through Toast Tab if you'd like to enjoy a quiet brunch at home. Food is ready for pick up within 10 to 15 minutes!

Little Coco's

Attention Italian lovers: you've probably never had Italian like this! The folks at Little Coco's restaurant pride themselves on being a pleasantly different twist on an old classic. Offering "bottomless brunch" on Saturday and Sunday, their cozy atmosphere and new rooftop bar entitled "Coco Beach" are sure to please. For something new in the pasta sphere, try some goat cheese ravioli or crab risotto. Are you tired of the same boring pizza choices? Then you've come to the right place! On Little Coco's menu, you'll find options like Mediterranean, green goddess, and The Godfather. The Godfather is a red pie, which simply means it's covered in crushed Italian tomatoes (think "big flavor"). Laden with soppressata (dry salami), mushrooms, caramelized onions, ricotta, and basil, not even The Godfather himself could refuse this succulent pizza pie. Add a cup of cappuccino, and you'll be set to enjoy the rest of your day exploring Mount Pleasant.

Ellē

Pronounced "Ell-ee," this classy restaurant has won numerous awards, including being named the "number one best new restaurant" in 2018 by Tom Sietsema in the Washington Post's Spring Dining Guide. EllÄ“ is also a bakery, café, and bar, and in addition to serving great meals, they even bake all their bread, pastries, and cakes themselves — and they brew a mean cup of coffee too. Try a gourmet cheese and charcuterie plate, a handmade pizza, or a veggie burger (100% vegan). Maybe you're pining for a unique sandwich? If so, you can choose your favorite bread from their bakery. You haven't lived until you've tried their country sourdough! EllÄ“ also has a grocery store, where you can do a little shopping for your household staple food and buy some pretty snazzy meal kits. You can even grab a cool tote or T-shirt from their merchandise shop.

Flip It LJ Diner

This neat little café is smartly decorated, and you're sure to "flip" for their oh-so-yummy offerings of American and Mexican food. Popular dishes at Flip It LJ Diner include burrata toast, Spanish breakfast, and their generous chorizo burrito. It's a massive meal of tortilla-wrapped tastiness. Served with arugula, pesto, tomatoes, and a poached egg, these exciting flavors go well with a side of plantains or home fries and bacon. If you want a simpler brunch, try their crab cake sandwich (yes, that's really a thing!). They make all the crab cakes in-house and serve this seafood gem on a Kaiser roll with lettuce, tomato, and tartar sauce and a side order of French fries. Take A Stroll Through Rock Creek Park

If you live in Mt. Pleasant, Rock Creek Park is a haven of nature, music, science, history, and art at your fingertips!

This resource wraps around the North and West side of the neighborhood, so grab a friend, put on your hiking boots, or take your bike and go for a ride.

Nature and Legislature In Washington D.C.

spend time in rock creek park

There are 1,754 acres of land to explore in Rock Creek Park. The park was officially authorized in 1890 creating a space for nature to flourish in the middle of the Nation's Capital.

The authorization marks this majestic place in the woods as the third national park designated by the federal government in American history.

Some of the best places to start your hike are at the nature center or the boundary bridge. There are over 32 trails to chose from among the trees, creeks, hills, and wildlife that loop visitors in paths across the park which range from one to ten miles long.

Fluid Creeks and Music Leaks

listen to music in the park
Search for turtles among the many creeks or grab a blanket and your ukulele to play some beats.

Concerts, dance, and theatre events start in the park around July at the Carter Barron Amphitheater which can hold up to 4,000 people!

Unfortunately, the word has leaked that the amphitheater will be closed this summer for structural reassessment. But that doesn’t stop local D.C. residences from strumming their guitars beneath the stars.

Science Spitz and Sky High Hits

check out the park's planetarium

The Planetarium at Rock Creek Park invites people from around the globe to explore the sky using high tech spitz software that projects images of the stars onto the ceiling of the dome-shaped building.

Park Rangers lead participants on a free ride through the galaxy, and beyond, anyone can pick up free tickets just an hour before the show!

Don’t miss out on the once-a-month stargazing sessions that occur April through November of every year in Rock Creek Park. Telescopes will be set up at the Military Feild for anyone who wants to join in!

Mt. Pleasant History at Rock Creek Park

there's a lot of history in rock creek park
Did you know that our former U.S. president Teddy Roosevelt used to horseback ride, hike, and even swim at Rock Creek Park?

Okay, okay, that was in the early 1900s. We do not recommend such scandalous endeavors because the park rangers definitely won’t approve.

What is also super cool about the history behind this park is that you can find the old House of Mercy on the edge of Rosemont Ave and Klingle Road NW.

The 1920s were very progressive because this humble abode supported young mothers and women in prostitution. #GoWomen

Tennis Courts and Much More

play tennis at rock creek park
There is so much more to do at Rock Creek Park!

You can head there any day of the year to play a game on their tennis courts at 16th and Kennedy Streets NW.

Put on your polo and cap and head to the Rock Creek golf courts with a business partner or friend. This 18-hole public course has a clubhouse and is located on 16th street and Rittenhouse Street NW.

Take a ride among the rapids at the Key Bridge Boathouse where you can rent kayaks, canoes, paddle boards and even attend exercise classes.

If you like to go horseback riding, Rock Creek Park accommodates with over 12 miles of dirt and gravel for your big hooved friends. This is a great place to picnic and bring furry pets after a visit to the vet!

Take your family there to swing about the free playgrounds or go on a self-guided cell phone tour throughout the nooks and crannies of nature in the Nations Capital.

Volunteer Opportunities Here

volunteer to pick up trash in the park

Be a part of the community, get your family involved and help keep the mystical nature within our Nation's Capital alive!

You can sign up for individual and group volunteer efforts if you are a go-getter ready to lend a hand any day of the week. Or you can join in on any of Rock Creek Parks Volunteer Events.

With all these cool things to do right in the heart of the city, it's no wonder that Washington DC ranked number 19 in the U.S. News "125 Best Places to Live in the USA 2019" list. Get together with the people in your Mt. Pleasant neighborhood and beyond to help keep with place crawling with art, history, music, fun, and of course all the birds, bees, and critters!

Head to Rock Creek Park today, stay awhile, watch the sunset, and stare up at the stars we promise if you have any worries, you’ll forget.

They have pumps and lube and tools on hand for simple fixes, and the volunteers who help them are all a helpful, well-loved part of the weekly market.

Coffee

Don’t worry. Getting up at 9 is difficult. Pagoda Cofee is here for you. They are an awesome local pop-up coffee and design team who, let’s be honest, fuel this whole shebang.

Farmers

The Mt. Pleasant Farmers Market is a great opportunity to support experienced farmers who raise organic produce raise their livestock ethically. Check out this list of farms from Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, and Pennslyvania.

  • Truck Patch Farms: Salad greens, all kinds of broccoli, cauliflower and herbs. Seriously, these guys get creative with herbs. We are talking apple, chocolate, and orange mint varieties here. Lovingly raised pork available as well.

  • Spring Gap Mountain Creamery: From Paw Paw, West Virginia (yes, you read that right), you can find gouda, feta, cheddar, camembert, and tomme cheeses. Not interested in cheese? How about unpasteurized Jersey cow milk?

Bakers

What’s more delicious (or European) than picking up fresh-made bread at the market to eat later that day? How about cookies, muffins, scones granola? All of this and more from Baltimore’s own Atwater’s Bread.

Preserve Makers

preserves at the farmers market

Number 1 Sons from Arlington, VA, make krauts, pickles, kimchis, and more, always changing seasonally. Definitely worth stopping by.

Lunch

Hungry for Middle Eastern goodness? You can grab falafel sandwiches, hummus, and baba ghanoush from Hilana Cuisine.

Or have you tried Chinese Bao? It’s a steamed bun filled with roasted pork shoulder or duck confit and veggies.

There are fresh, organic salad bowls sold by Truck Patch Farms to try as well as a stand for Manos de Maiz tortillas, made from locally sourced corn (make sure to ask this vendor about the traditions they are honoring).

Treats!

frozen treats at pleasant pops

Try a frozen pop made locally in the Pleasant Pops Adams Morgan cafe. Each week they bring out an ice cream cart with four different flavors — they aren’t afraid to switch it up week after week.

So Much More

If you want to know what else you’ll find — you just have to go experience it. New vendors are applying all the time. The good news is that with the market so close to home, you can go every weekend to see what's new!

What Grows Seasonally?

seasonal vegetbales
Some researchers posit that the best diet for most humans is simply a regional, seasonal one (and obviously keep it as organic as possible).

Each season the produce that naturally grows offers us just what we need — for instance, the bitter greens that grow in spring help detoxify the liver from the heavier foods and fats we ate all winter.

Curious about what grows seasonally in our region? Check out this handy guide to what fruits and vegetables grow seasonally in the area published by the Maryland Dept. of Agriculture.

Stay Connected

support local groceries
Oh — and in the meantime, go ahead and support your local grocery stores, like the Best World Supermarket! Keep up with news about the Mt. Pleasant Farmers Market on twitter, facebook or via their website newsletter.

See you in April!

Mt. Pleasant Hidden Gems: The Library

enjoying the library with family and friends
Learn more about your neighborhood! Have you checked out the Mt. Pleasant library in Washington DC yet? You haven’t!?! No way. This one is too good to miss.

A Little-Known History

enoch pratt founded the library

The story of the Mt. Pleasant Library can be traced back to a man named Enoch Pratt, born in 1808.

Pratt was a Unitarian Universalist who became a very successful businessman and realized he wanted to uplift those around him. The public library that he founded in Baltimore, called the Enoch Pratt Free Library, impressed Andrew Carnegie deeply.

With Pratt as his “guide and inspiration” Carnegie funded 3,000 public libraries, both during his lifetime and after his death by setting aside resources in his foundation. One of those libraries, found in the District of Columbia, was the Mt. Pleasant Library. Mt. Pleasant Library was designed by Edward Lippincott Tilton and officially opened in 1925.

The building was renovated in 2012 for $11.5 million and it is now a beautiful blend of modern and classic, with open airy designs and a sense of quiet movement throughout.

The Marvelous Murals

check out the murals at the library

The Works Progress Administration was a Great-Depression era initiative in which public projects were funded by the Federal Government. Many people, mostly unskilled men, were hired to construct buildings, roads, etc.

There was a project within that project, though, called Federal Project Number One, which employed artists and writers, actors and musicians, etc. This is how it came to be that Aurelius Battaglia, an artist who would go on to work for Walt Disney Studios and be awarded a BAFTA much later in his career, was commissioned to paint the wall murals.

The Murals are a fantastical depiction of a circus that has been taken over by the animals. Battaglia would end up working on Disney’s landmark Fantasia, which came out in 1940, and these Murals may well have been early experimentations and hints of what was to come.

For Adults

movie night at the library

As far as libraries go, the Mt. Pleasant Library basically doubles as a community center. Maybe there is something here for you!

Movie Screenings

While they aren’t exactly showing blockbusters designed to attract everyone on the block, the Mt. Pleasant Library does host film viewings designed to intrigue viewers and stimulate discussion.

Yoga

Join in on Saturday mornings at 10 am for free yoga classes! Beginners are welcome, just bring your own mat and water!

Classes and Seminars

There are so many cool opportunities to learn! Come to a DIY class for making your skincare routine more sustainable, or a seminar on financial planning, home buying, and credit.

English Conversation Opportunities

If you having a working knowledge of English but you want to take it to the next level then come by for the English Conversation Circle, a drop-in group for adults that want to feel more confident in their English skills.

Socializing Opportunities

Sometimes they host a “Coffee + Conversation” time where people who enjoy reading and discussing ideas can come to meet each other and develop relationships. New to the neighborhood? Join in!

Other events like plant swaps, book swaps, book discussion series, etc. Make sure to constantly check in for updates because sometimes they will schedule events a few weeks out.

For Kids

childrens programs at the library

If you are sick of taking your kids all the way out to the national mall to keep them entertained, try taking them to the library instead. Taking your kids to free classes and activities at the Mount Pleasant Library is a great way to help them make more friends nearby while also plugging your whole family into the community.

Babies and Toddlers

Check out activities like “Baby Lap Time,” a place for you to introduce your baby to reading and playing alongside other young parents!

There is “Baby and Toddler Story Time” as well, a very popular weekly event. Space is limited, so it’s first-come, first-serve!

Another great option is “Little Builders,” a time for very young children to play with blocks and with each other!

STEM and Educational Opportunities

Give your child a head start by taking them to STEM Thursdays, Afterschool Activity programs, or podcast-making classes. There are teen book clubs too!

Language Learning Opportunities

“Bilingual Spanish Story Time” is an opportunity for Spanish speaking children to become more familiar with English and for native English speakers to become more familiar with Spanish!

Stay Connected!

Keep up with what’s happening by regularly checking the Mt. Pleasant Neighborhood Library website regularly. See you there!

The Ultimate Guide to Eating Healthy in Mount Pleasant

eat healthy in mt pleasant

Many people set annual New Years’ goals of eating healthier, but the hustle and bustle of daily life make it difficult to stick to those resolutions. A schedule filled with work demands, social and family obligations, community activities, and simply trying to take a few minutes to relax can quickly result in food being grabbed for its convenience — not its nutritional value.

With just a little planning, you can mitigate the need for fast-food burger runs and scrounging through cupboards filled with processed items. Mt. Pleasant residents are in luck, too, as several of their local restaurants offer healthy options for eat-in or takeout.

Best Mt. Pleasant Restaurants For a Quick, Healthy Bite

1. Angelico Pizza

healthy pizza

Even pizza places offer healthier fare, and Angelico has plenty of options. Whether you’re personally in the mood for dine-in or takeout Italian, or meeting friends or family for a night out, these options will keep your hunger sated without breaking your healthy eating resolutions:

  • Hummus dip with warm pita triangles (go easy on the pita, or ask if you can get a veggie to dip instead)

  • Angelico salad with romaine lettuce, artichokes, tomatoes and red onions in balsamic vinaigrette (ask for dressing on the side)

  • Grilled chicken salad with romaine lettuce, tomatoes, red onions, bell peppers, provolone cheese, grilled chicken breast, and balsamic vinaigrette (dressing on the side)

  • Grilled salmon salad with romaine lettuce, tomatoes, red onions, roasted red peppers, fresh mozzarella, grilled salmon and balsamic vinaigrette (dressing on the side)

  • Shrimp pesto wrap with lettuce, artichokes and feta cheese (ask for creamy pesto sauce on the side)

  • Veggie wrap with hummus, roasted red peppers, roasted eggplant, red onions, baby spinach, Kalamata olives, feta cheese, and sun-dried tomatoes (mayo on the side)

  • Peppery Portobello mushroom pasta with chicken or shrimp

2. Beau Thai

healthy thai food

This fresh and authentic Thai restaurant is open for lunch and dinner every day of the week, including weekend brunches, and offers dine-in, carryout, and delivery services. Its chefs use a labor-intensive process to hand create its signature sauces and spice combinations, putting extra care and love into each and every dish. Healthier options include:

  • Garden rolls filled with vegetables, noodles, and tofu with a tamarind dipping sauce (use the tamarind sauce sparingly)

  • Grilled chicken salad with fresh greens and grilled chicken (go light on the vinaigrette)

  • Grilled vegetable salad and tofu (go light on the ginger dressing)

  • Papaya salad with grilled shrimp, tomatoes, string beans, crushed peanuts, and a lime dressing

  • Tom Kha soup with coconut milk, chicken, Thai herbs, and mushrooms

  • Tom Yum soup with spicy chicken broth, mushrooms, and shrimp

  • Yum beef grilled flank steak in spicy Thai dressing

3. Elle

healthy baked goods

This restaurant and bakery offer a rotating menu of options, often changing what it servers on a daily basis. It works hard to use locally sourced, fresh ingredients as much as possible, and its chefs put a creative spin on each of its offerings. Some of our past favorites include the quiche of the day, Tuscan kale soup, farm green salad, spicy farm apples, charred sweet potato curry, and olive oil poached swordfish, but you’ll have to visit the Elle menu for a list of current offerings.

4. Mola

healthy spanish cuisine

If you’re in the mood for coastal Spanish-style cuisine, Mola is the place to be. It offers dine-in options for brunch or dinner, plus plenty of fresh menu items perfect for healthier eating. Be sure to try:

  • Serrano ham with marinated manchego, piquillo peppers, and olives

  • Chickpea puree with ground spiced lamb and guindilla peppers

  • Garlic, chili, and anchovy roasted spinach ends with Romesco sauce

  • Tomato and raisin braised eggplant with pine nuts and mato cheese

  • Pan-seared garlic shrimp with chickpeas, chili and tomato

  • Marinated pork loin with piquillo peppers over sautéed spinach with pine nuts and raisins

  • Grilled mixed lamb with roasted mushrooms, artichoke, ajo blanco and watercress salad

5. Purple Patch

healthy filipino food

For delicious Filipino and American fare, look no further than a newer Mt. Pleasant brunch and dinner favorite: Purple Patch Food & Drink. The restaurant prides itself on offering authentic versions of traditional items from both the Philippines and the U.S., and that includes lighter food options like:

  • Grapefruit, mango and mint fruit salad

  • Greek yogurt with blueberries, pineapple, toasted coconut, and lemon honey syrup

  • House salad with fried tofu and lemon vinaigrette (dressing on the side)

  • Adobo radicchio wraps with chicken and atchara papaya salad

  • Grilled pork skewers with papaya salad

  • Baby arugula salad with shallots, shaved gruyere and lemon vinaigrette (dressing on the side)

  • Baby red beet and heirloom tomato salad with arugula and red wine vinaigrette

6. Taqueria Los Compadres

try healthy mexican tacos

If you’re looking for unique, traditional Mexican food, check out Taqueria. It’s got a lot of fan favorites, including these healthier and lighter options

  • Huaraches and sopes

  • Vegetarian omelet with onions, tomatoes, mushrooms, and spinach

  • Cecina beef with rice, beans, cactus salad, and fresh cheese

  • Camarones a la diabla – sautéed shrimp, rice and house salad

  • Grilled salmon with rice and a house salad

  • Tostada de ensalada de nopales

  • Chicken tinga tacos with chipotle shredded chicken

  • Vegetarian tacos and fish tacos

How to Eat Healthy in DC if You’re in a Time Crunch

Life happens, and sometimes you don’t have the option to choose a healthy meal option. In those instances, be mindful of your portion sizes and eat your less-healthy option slowly. Taking smaller bites and setting your fork down between each one will allow your stomach to register when it is no longer hungry, keeping you from overeating something that might not be great for your new healthy eating goals. Forget about wasting food or resources, either, as you can always take the leftovers home with you!
